At ObGyn Matters, we offer personalised contraceptive care — from first-time advice through to long-term methods and management. Whether you’re looking to start contraception, switch methods, or have a device fitted, we provide expert, discreet support tailored to your individual needs and stage of life.

Your contraceptive choices

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to contraception. We offer a full range of options and will help you choose what’s best for your body, lifestyle and plans.

1. Oral Hormonal Contraception

  • Combined Pill (oestrogen + progestogen): Taken daily, helps regulate cycles and reduce bleeding or cramps. Not suitable for everyone, particularly if you have certain risk factors
  • Progestogen-only Pill (POP): Suitable for women who cannot take oestrogen, including during breastfeeding. Needs to be taken at the same time each day

We offer guidance on starting, switching or reviewing your pill prescription, including managing side effects and cycle control.

2. Contraceptive Implant

  • A small, flexible rod inserted under the skin of the upper arm
  • Lasts for 3 years and is over 99% effective
  • Works by releasing progestogen to prevent ovulation
  • Insertion and removal are quick and done in clinic under local anaesthetic

We provide full counselling, insertion, follow-up checks and removal when needed.

3. Intrauterine Devices (IUD and IUS)

  • Copper IUD: A non-hormonal device that prevents fertilisation. Lasts 10 years. May cause heavier periods
  • Hormonal IUS (e.g. Mirena): Releases progestogen directly into the uterus. Lasts 8 years. Commonly reduces bleeding patterns and has limited systemic side effects

IUD/IUS insertion is carried out in clinic and usually takes around 15–20 minutes. We offer full support including advice beforehand, fitting under local anaesthetic if needed, and follow-up ultrasound to confirm positioning where needed

What to expect during your consultation

We start with a detailed discussion about:

  • Your health history
  • Menstrual pattern and preferences
  • Future fertility plans
  • Lifestyle considerations

We’ll talk through all your options and answer any questions you may have. If you’re ready to proceed, insertion of a device or starting the pill may be possible during the same visit.

Insertion & Aftercare

For implant or IUD/IUS fittings, we provide:

  • Clear preparation guidance before your appointment
  • Local anaesthetic for comfort when needed
  • A calm, professional environment with a consultant gynaecologist
  • Aftercare instructions
  • A follow-up plan, including ultrasound if required

Most women return to normal activities the same day. Mild cramps or spotting are common and settle quickly.

How to Switch Contraception

If you’re unhappy with your current method or experiencing side effects, we can help you explore alternatives. Whether you’re looking to simplify your routine, address hormonal symptoms, or want a non-hormonal option, we’ll work with you to find a better fit.

Ready to stop contraception?

If you’re considering pregnancy, or want your method removed or discontinued, we’ll guide you safely through the process — including fertility advice, cycle tracking, and pre-conception support where needed.
